4.1.1.1 Gather and file articles and reports, global and national, over a 6-month period regarding the changing nature of the Long-Term insurance industry. Comment on the following using the articles collected as source of information:

i) The Insurance industry has seen many new pieces of Legislation passed in recent years and many articles written about these new laws. Analyse 2 articles on Legislation that could or has changed the insurance sector. Comment on the potential impact on the sector.

ii) Write a short essay on the current events in the South African socio political and economic environment. Interpret these events and comment on their possible impact on insurance.

iii) Identify and comment on current events in the Public Health Sector that have implications for one of the sub sectors of long-term insurance and give an indication of the possible effects on the sub sector.

This task requires that you identify developments in technology that could impact on insurance
4.1.2.1 Identify and discuss how new developments in technology could impact the Long-Term insurance and/or improve service delivery.

4.1.3.1 Interpret the effect of innovations in medical treatment and drug development on one of the sub sectors of long-term insurance
i) List and interpret innovations and developments in medical science with reference to how each could impact on one of the sub sectors of the long-term insurance industry.

ii) Comment on the positive and negative aspects of the new and current remedies discussed .

iii) Write a short essay discussing the cost implications of the new drugs/treatments/innovation and how this would contribute to optimal care.

iv) Identify life threatening events and determine whether these events could form a pattern that trend could be based upon.

4.1.4.1 Investigate the spread of diseases in Africa from reports in the media
i) Write an essay based on the articles you sourced regarding: (20)
• Health related trends in Africa are identified and the possible influence of these trends on underwriting practices in South Africa is indicated with reference to how they could affect product development or claims assessing.
• Trends in the spread of the five most common infectious diseases in Africa are analysed and suggestions are made as to how the spread could be arrested or contained.
• Reasons for the re-occurrence/re-emergence and/or spread of previously controlled diseases are explained with examples.
• The effect of mutations of viruses on the spread of diseases is identified with examples.
• The causes of the most common ailments/medical conditions in Africa are analysed from print media and newscasts and suggestions are made of possible ways to reduce the impact of these conditions.
• Incidences of disease and trends in Africa that could impact on South Africa are identified and an indication is given of how these trends could affect a subsector of long-term insurance.
• Diseases currently considered to be epidemics in Africa are named and an indication is given of how epidemics differ from outbreaks of a disease.
